5.2 GWh BESS portfolio in Poland

KRD Renewables was appointed to undertake buy-side Technical Due Diligence for a portfolio of five utility-scale battery energy storage projects in Poland.

The portfolio had a combined nominal capacity of 1.3 GW / 5.2 GWh and comprised four-hour BESS projects at different stages of development. These ranged from early-stage development through to advanced and Ready-to-Build assets.

KRD’s SCOPE

KRD delivered an integrated technical assessment across the portfolio, reviewing the key areas that could affect technical maturity, bankability and transaction risk.

The scope covered:

– Battery technology, system architecture and performance

– Environmental permitting and regulatory compliance

– Land rights, zoning and site constraints

– Grid connection arrangements and technical interfaces

– BESS supply, construction and service contracts

– Development and construction programmes

– Fire safety and certification requirements

– Cybersecurity, EMS, BMS and SCADA requirements

– Technical assumptions within the financial model

– Portfolio-wide risk identification and mitigation

By assessing these areas together, KRD was able to review both individual project risks and the consistency of assumptions across the wider portfolio.

KEY CHALLENGES

The five projects were at different levels of maturity and had varying technical configurations and documentation. This required a consistent approach across the portfolio while still accounting for project-specific issues.

KRD assessed the alignment of technical and contractual assumptions between the assets, including usable energy at the point of interconnection, degradation, availability, efficiency, warranty conditions and operational performance.

Particular attention was also given to grid-interface risks, permitting dependencies, fire-safety compliance and cybersecurity documentation.

Construction schedules were reviewed alongside the underlying technical and contractual arrangements. KRD also examined whether the assumptions used within the financial model were aligned with the technical characteristics of the projects.

OUTCOME

KRD provided the client with an independent assessment of the portfolio’s technical maturity, bankability and principal transaction risks.

The findings were translated into practical mitigation measures rather than remaining as a standalone risk review. These included recommended conditions precedent, contractual protections, technical acceptance requirements and targeted actions designed to reduce exposure relating to permitting, grid connection and project delivery programmes.
This enabled the client to evaluate the five projects on a consistent basis and supported its wider investment and transaction decision-making process.
